Interview: The Hood Internet

The Hood Internet (STV SLV & ABX)

Despite mash-ups becoming somewhat of a taboo genre, The Hood Internet has found a way to keep the computer blends alive and has avid listeners coming back to TheHoodInternet.com for regular drops of guilty pleasures mixed with indy artists. DJs ABX and STV SLV bought the domain name TheHoodInternet.com in 2007 while living in Chicago. They weren’t sure what to do with it at first, then began posting mash-ups like they owed money, but have never charged for a single song or mixtape.

The Hood Internet is now a fixture in Chicago’s dance scene, being able to get a floor full of rump shakers going at full intensity in under 10 minutes, and some would say they’ve reached Internet platinum. I talked to half of Hood Internet, STV SLV, about some of the lesser-known habits and interests of the remix tag team, and even the starting of an original album.

BK: I’ve read that you have a fixation with ghetto straight to DVD movies. What would you say is your favorite one?

STV SLV: Cash Money Records: “Baller Blockin’”

BK: And what would you say is the rough plot to that?

STV SLV: Hustling drugs, problems with the cops, shoot outs, resolution.

BK: I saw with your photo shoot with Clayton you posed in front of a hot dog stand, a taco joint, and your twitter is curly fries. What’s up with all the junk food?

STV SLV: It’s just what we’re about. [Laughs] It’s funny, Ian and I had a series of shows, regional stuff we would to drive to; Indiana, Wisconsin, Champagne [Urbana], and would hit Arby’s all along the way. And just a huge fan of Arby’s in general. Although, I’ve realized I haven’t been there once in 2009, yet. There’s a “fancy” Arby’s—we twittered about this—opening up at the location of this old steak house in Brooklyn. I heard about this from a friend and decided we have to DJ the opening.

BK: Is this in the works at all?

STV SLV: Yes and no. Yes, that I am thinking a lot about it. But no, that no one else is thinking about it—particularly the people at Arby’s.

BK: When’s the next mixtape coming out?

STV SLV: Probably by the summer/fall. We haven’t started on it, but we have enough stuff since the last mixtape to draw a collection of things. We’ve also been throwing around the idea of working on The Hood Internet Record. Which is going to be a full-on new production, with little bits and pieces of music we get from artists we know, and our friends that are musicians. But it’s not going to be of the mash up nature. It’ll have the same concept of taking various elements and ideas and putting them together. That won’t be out ‘till late next year though.

BK: And what’s the first thing you think of when I say “High Life”?

STV SLV: Miller! Right?

Be sure to check out The Hood Internet this Friday (July 17th) at the Darkroom (2210 W. Chicago) for Life During Wartime.
